Supporting Tasmanian Teachers

The Liberal Government is laying the foundations to create a job-ready generation.

Education is the key to eliminating disadvantage, improving standards of living, growing our economy and creating jobs.

We have invested a record $1.4 billion in education this year and every State school will receive a minimum 5 per cent increase through the cash component of their Schools Resource Package.

In line with our commitment to lift education standards, the Liberal Government will provide additional support  for Tasmania's teachers and education staff to develop their skills.

We know that quality teaching leads to better outcomes for students and today I am pleased to announce a suite of initiatives to support our education professionals.

Developing Our Workforce Strategy will focus on driving school improvements and student learning and targets current skill gaps such as having qualified Maths and Science teachers for all classes in rural and regional schools.

Funded through the Better Schools Tasmania Agreement (Gonski) the strategy will assist in improving the quality of teaching across all Tasmanian Government schools.

Approximately $4.2 million has been allocated over three years.

The Department of Education will partner with the Education Faculty at Utas to develop innovative courses to further develop our education workforce and ensure we have the best and brightest minds inspiring our students.

The strategy will focus on graduate teacher preparation and recruitment, development and training of high-performing teachers to teach in identified curriculum areas and geographical areas, training of school leaders, both teaching and non-teaching and teacher assistants.

This will help all schools provide high-quality education programs, delivered by highly skilled and committed teachers and support staff.
