The Hodgman Liberal Government has long been a supporter of the shellfish industry and that’s why it’s important to recognise the many successes at the Shellfish Futures Industry Annual Conference today.
The last few years have been challenging however the industry has learnt and grown from the experiences, and there are many positives which will see a sustainable sector into the future.
To ensure the Tasmanian brand continues to grow, the Government is investing $1.2 million into the upgrade of Analytical Services Tasmania to become a world-class laboratory, which we expect to be fully operational by the end of the year.
This will provide a fast reliable service supporting not only our shellfish sector but lobster, abalone, scallop and clam industries which is valued at more than $200 million to the Tasmanian economy.
We’re continuing to work in partnership with industry to ensure we have a modern and effective system that guarantees quality of our shellfish product, protects our brands and provides market access.
Our support to growers as they recover from the Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome (POMS) continues with $765,000 allocated in this year’s Budget to assist in ongoing recovery measures.
This comes on top of our significant package to support growers that included clean-up grants, concessional loans and fee relief.
We acknowledge the strong leadership of Oysters Tasmania and will continue to work with them for long-term future success of the shellfish industry.
