Supporting Constitutional Recognition of the First Australians

The Liberal Government strongly supports the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people as the first Australians.

Today, in National Reconciliation Week, I moved a motion in Parliament calling on all parties to unite and send a strong message of support for this change.

The 2014 theme for National Reconciliation Week is 'Let's walk the talk'. This theme is intended to remind us that great achievements take courage and persistence, and that the next step forward in reconciliation is to complete the Australian Constitution by recognising the First Australians.

I encourage all Tasmanians to join the reconciliation conversation and to build stronger relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, especially the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.
