Supporting Jobs – Red Velvet Lounge

The State Budget this week will focus on supporting and creating new jobs, which is a key priority of the Tasmanian Liberal Government.

My Government will back business to create more jobs and economic prosperity.

Following a recommendation from the Tasmanian Development Board we will support the revival of one of southern Tasmania’s quintessential cafes, the Red Velvet Lounge in Cygnet, which was destroyed by fire last year.

A $75,000 loan will be provided to the Red Velvet Lounge owner Steve Cumper and his team to enable them to reopen the café, creating three full time jobs and up to nine casual positions.

The reopening will also contribute up to $300,000 in wages to the local area and support local producers who provide much of the fresh produce that made the café synonymous with Cygnet.

The Red Velvet Lounge will be up and running in July, with the help of $30,000 in public donations and a significant investment by Mr Cumper, providing a great boost for the local economy and regional tourism.

We are a Government that’s committed to giving Tasmanians the very best chance at gaining a good job.

Last month, through the facilitation of the Coordinator-General, Hydro partnered with Bell Bay Aluminium to secure $30 million investment in the facility and secure the future of 1,500 jobs.

Yesterday, I announced that following advice from the Tasmanian Development Board, we will support the creation of an additional 50 jobs at the leading ICT firm UXC.

Jobs are our priority, from big business with thousands of workers to small business, the engine room of our economy, because the opportunity for a good job is the best thing the Government can provide to Tasmanians.
