Supporting frontline workers front and centre in Parliament this week

Better supporting frontline workers such as police and fire fighters will be front and centre in Parliament this week.

We are now getting to the pointy end of the parliamentary year, and the pressure is on Labor to clearly explain where they stand on these key issues.

In particular, Labor will need to declare whether or not they support guaranteed prison time for people convicted of knowingly assaulting off-duty police officers who are targeted because of their job.

The law already provides for guaranteed jail for people who seriously assault on-duty police officers, and we strongly believe this protection should be extended to off-duty officers.

The question is, will Labor support closing this loophole?

Legislation to better support our volunteer firefighters by lowering the threshold for presumptive cancers will also be introduced and debated.

In what's shaping up to be a busy week, the Parliament will also see a critical final vote on our Plan to phase out suspended sentences. Also, we will see the introduction of legislation to abolish remissions from the prison (early release).

We will also look to debate the Limitations Amendment Bill, which takes the major step of retrospectively abolishing current limitation periods to make civil damages claims in relation to sexual or serious physical abuse that occurred when the plaintiff was a child.

There is now only six sitting days before the election, and Tasmanians are still none the wiser as to what Labor actually stands for, as a result of Labor making an art form out of its "small-target-no-policy" strategy.
