The Liberal Government is supportive of trials for the potential use of medicinal cannabis on the basis it provides an evidence-based approach and appropriate
regulatory framework for the product, so we welcome developments in New South Wales.
Earlier this year at COAG I raised this important issue and it was agreed a collaborative approach between the states and territories should be pursued.
I have asked the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate ways we can work with NSW authorities to gain a greater understanding of the potential for use of cannabis-derived products for medicinal purposes.
NSW has also moved to ensure police in that state do not pursue charges against terminally ill people using cannabis. It is important to note Tasmania Police already have this discretion.
