We welcome the elite of Australian netball today when, for the first time Suncorp Super Netball League comes to the Silverdome.
The game between our Collingwood Magpies and the Queensland Firebirds is a pinnacle of our partnership with Netball Australia and the Collingwood Football Club.
We are investing $1.65 million in this partnership over three years to increase grassroots participation while also developing pathways into top-level Australian netball competition.
The agreement also features one annual national netball league pre-season camp in Tasmania along with opportunities for talented Tasmanians to train at Collingwood facilities. Players will also participate in high performance programs and there’ll be further development opportunities for coaches, umpires, bench officials, administrators and staff.
Importantly, as a part of this funding arrangement, Netball Tasmania will be assisted to establish the Tasmanian Magpies team in the second-tier Australian Netball league and this presents another opportunity for our players to compete on the national stage with a pathway to top level netball.
We have a growing reputation as a destination for elite sporting events and today we add another much loved sport to the growing roster of international and national games played here.
Today’s game allows local fans to experience great netball in our own backyard.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a strong track record of investing in events and top level sport because it helps to build a healthier community while also benefiting the local economy.
