Students honour WWI history with tour of the Western Front

Congratulations to the six recipients of the 2017-18 Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize, named in honour of Tasmania’s last surviving World War I veteran.

The Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize plays a key role in helping Tasmanian students learn more about Tasmania’s rich military history, passing on understanding of World War I to new generations.

While the events of World War I are over 100 years ago I’m sure that Frank MacDonald, his family and descendants would be so very proud that Tasmania’s young people continue to recognise the service and sacrifice of Tasmania’s servicemen and women.

Since the first competition in 2003, the year Frank MacDonald died at the age of 107, Tasmanian prize winning students have had the opportunity to take part in a 10-day study tour of the Western Front in France and Belgium.

Incorporating ANZAC Day, and taking in many of the areas where he served, the prize is an excellent way for our students to learn more about history and keep the ANZAC spirit alive.

The 2017-18 recipients are:

  • Joshua Brennan, Rose Bay High School;
  • Macy Charles, Taroona High School;
  • Jordan Moss, St Patricks College;
  • Nicole Patrick, Launceston Church Grammar School;
  • Francis Munro, Taroona High School;
  • Molly Woolcock, Launceston Church Grammar School.
