The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to ensuring Tasmanian children have the best possible knowledge and experiences that will allow them to lead happy, healthy and active lives.
The Government’s Healthy Tasmania Strategic Plan released yesterday will work to increase student health and wellbeing through the Student Health Initiative, our flagship program for children and young people.
With obesity rates worryingly high, it’s crucial that we take strong action to educate people to make healthy choices, and evidence tells us the early years are the most critical time for establishing good health habits for life.
The initiative will invest $2 million over four years to ensure that healthy habits are learned early, which will help us achieve the generational change required to support children in making healthy, safe and active choices.
It will also encourage school and community partners to focus on activity related to:
The factors for good health are broader than just the health portfolio, which is why the Healthy Tasmania Strategic Plan is a whole-of-government policy, and the Student Health Initiative is a key example of cross-portfolio action needed to address poor health outcomes in our community
It will commence in Term 1 of 2017 and will be supported by the Department of Education.
Additionally, all Government schools will have commenced a process to achieve canteen accreditation by no later than 2020.
