Strengthened environmental management for salmon industry

Legislation to further strengthen the environmental management of Tasmania’s salmon industry is today a step closer.

The Marine Farming Planning Amendment Bill today passed the Legislative Council.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is a strong supporter of our world-class salmon industry, which is highly regarded for its quality products and sustainability.

We want to support the industry to continue to grow and create more jobs, and we understand that to do this it must maintain community and market confidence.

The changes to the Marine Farming Planning Act will help to ensure environmental regulations keep pace with industry expansion.

The Parliament has agreed to increase the maximum possible fine for a serious breach of environmental management controls from $31,400, to include an additional special penalty that is calculated proportionate to the financial advantage obtained.

It also includes the reintroduction of demerit points for Infringement Notices, which for serial breaches could ultimately see a marine farming licence revoked.

In July, the independent Environment Protection Authority became responsible for all environmental controls and day-to-day environmental management.

As a Government we are committed to continuing to work with the industry to support sustainable, responsible and accountable growth of Tasmania’s world-class salmon industry.
