Jeremy Rockliff

Premier of Tasmania

23 November 2018

Sue Hickey, Speaker of the House of Assembly & Liberal Member for Clark

Statement from the Speaker

Having attended the AEU meeting this morning, I listened intently to concerns of the sector.

I have since had briefings from the Government, who have assured me that the Government made a good faith offer to the AEU which directly addressed workload issues raised by the union.

The Government has assured me that they want to sit down with the AEU and negotiate in good faith. I remain hopeful of a respectful and fair outcome, mindful of budget considerations and the needs of the educators of our children.

Everyone wants these matters resolved to avoid further disruption to parents, students and teachers.

I am also informed the Government is actively negotiating with the CPSU on broader wage conditions for all Tasmanian public servants, and in particular teacher’s assistants.
