Standing up for Tasmania’s fair share of the GST

The Hodgman Government will always stand up for Tasmania's interests and for our fair share of GST funding.

The Productivity Commission has today released a draft report into Horizontal Fiscal Equalisation, which underpins the way in which the GST is distributed to states and territories.

While we welcome the Productivity Commission’s broad support for the principle of Horizontal Fiscal Equalisation, the changes that are being suggested would see Tasmania lose substantial amounts of GST funding.

Based on the examples included in the report, the changes could potentially cost Tasmania around a billion dollars over four years.

To be clear: we cannot and will not support a change such as this that would damage Tasmania.

Tasmanians can be assured we will continue to strongly advocate Tasmania's case, and will resist attempts to reduce our share of the GST.
