Specialist teachers add to significance of National Literacy and Numeracy Week

National Literacy and Numeracy Week has special significance for Tasmania this year because students who need it are finally getting the extra help that they need.

The Liberal Government has delivered on our commitment to put 25 specialist teachers in public schools, and they will be working this week with students and classroom teachers to improve our educational outcomes.

Celebrated from today through to Sunday, National Literacy and Numeracy Week highlights the importance of literacy and numeracy and the programs that are available to help people improve their skills.

Tasmania's performance on NAPLAN testing has been consistently below the national average.

That's why the Liberal Government is investing in building the skills of our students and supporting our teachers, particularly in Years 7 and 9 where we are most behind other states.

The 26TEN Strategy, meanwhile, brings together business, community and government to tackle adult literacy and numeracy through removing stigma and providing support.

Improving literacy and numeracy skills can help change lives, and whatever your age, there is now the support available to help improve skills.
