Speaker 'Spins' for Kids

Things were in a real ‘spin’ at Parliament House today when I hosted my Give Me 5 for Kids Fidget Spinner fundraising event.

Joining us at lunch time were 20 students from Lansdowne Crescent Primary School to take on some of our brave MP’s in ‘Kids v Pollies’ fidget spinner competitions.

There was also the ‘Pollies v Journos’ competition to find out who really is the King or Queen of Spin?

Of course, it was all just a bit of light-hearted fun to raise money for a very good cause. Now in its 15th year, the annual ‘Give Me 5 for Kids’ appeal in Tasmania raises vital funds for facilities and services for children at the Royal Hobart Hospital Children’s Ward.

Last year’s total was over $408,654 which was a fantastic effort by Southern Tasmania and Give Me 5 for Kids is aiming for around the same again this year.

Every dollar raised in the south of the State goes directly to the RHH Children’s Ward and associated departments to purchase equipment that is requested specifically by the doctors and nursing staff.

Some notable wish list items this year include a Scanner Voluson E10 (costing $120,000) to carry out OB/GYN imaging with more clarity, speed and flexibility; and an Ultrasound Machine for bedside clinical use (costing $65,000) as the current machine is 10 years old and outdated.

I was delighted to have the support of my parliamentary colleagues and media today and I would like to personally thank all those who donated to help this wonderful cause.
