Speaker Joins with Students for Shootout with Tassie Basketball Great

Speaker of the House and Liberal Member for Denison, Elise Archer joined with a group of school students from New Town Primary School today for a shootout with Tassie basketball legend and coach of the Hobart Chargers, Anthony Stewart.

After a few slam dunks, mostly from Stewart, Madam Speaker had the privilege of representing the State Government to officially announce a new $250,000 funding agreement with Basketball Tasmania for our South-East Australian Basketball League clubs.

Community groups and schools are set to benefit most from the new funding agreement.

Importantly, funding will be provided to each of Tasmania’s SEABL clubs to assist them with continuing or establishing clinics to inspire everyday people to get out on their community courts and get active.

The clubs involved across Tasmania are the Hobart Chargers, the Launceston Tornadoes and the North West Thunder.

In the last year alone the Hobart Chargers has seen increased demand for school clinics as a result of greater participation in basketball, and the funding will assist them to deliver their school clinic program in the south.

Basketball is a high participation sport in Tasmania, with over 10,300 registered participants, and this agreement will further increase grassroots participation for local schools and community groups.

The State Government has a strong commitment to investing in initiatives that increase participation in sport and recreation, because it helps to build a healthier communities and will help us achieve our goal of making Tasmania the healthiest population in Australia.
