The Tasmanian Government has a strong plan to invest more than $350 million in Tasmania’s prison infrastructure.
This plan will deliver hundreds of jobs, provide a major economic stimulus and support Tasmania’s building construction sector.
A key part of this prison infrastructure plan is our $70 million Southern Remand Centre.
Scheduled to commence operation in late 2021, the Southern Remand Centre will significantly increase the capacity of the prison system, providing more than 150 new beds.
More than 130 jobs will be created during the Southern Remand Centre’s construction phase, with a further 50 ongoing jobs created once the facility becomes operational.
Hansen Yuncken, which has operated in the state since 1937 with a proven track record in building Tasmanian infrastructure, has been appointed as the Managing Contractor for the main construction phase.
Our Government is getting on with the job of modernising existing correctional facilities while also addressing future capacity and rehabilitation needs.
Today, I was pleased to see that works on this important project have continued on schedule, despite the significant challenges COVID-19 has presented.
