Southern Remand Centre contract signed

Tasmanian firm XSquared Architects and Victorian architects Gayer Bailey have been chosen as the Design Consultant for the $79.34 million Southern Remand Centre and Risdon Prison Complex upgrade program.

The design contract is valued at just under $4 million with the architects tasked with ensuring the design provides a positive environmental experience for staff and remandees.

The new $70 million remand facility will include two maximum security rated male accommodation units with a minimum of 140 beds across the two units, a medical clinic and a recreational hall.

The latest $9.34 million Risdon Prison Complex works will include an upgrade and extension of the Visitors' Centre, a new kitchen, and upgrades to the gatehouse and health centre.

The project is part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s commitment to optimising opportunities for rehabilitation and improving facilities in response to growing demand which is being felt across all Australian jurisdictions.

Construction is due to commence in March 2019.
