Under the Hodgman Liberal Government, business confidence is improving and retail turnover is at record highs, but there is still more work to be done to create jobs and grow our economy, and every Tasmanian can help by shopping local this Christmas.
The more we can do to help promote local spending the better it is for all Tasmanians, and the Hodgman Government is leading by example.
Under our Buy Local Policy, the percentage of government contracts awarded to Tasmanian-based firms has grown from 63% to 81%, and we have set a target of 90% by 2022.
By getting behind local retailers over the Christmas period, Tasmanians can support local jobs and put money back into their local economy.
Tasmania's retail sector continues to go from strength to strength with the latest figures revealing that over the past 12 months retail turnover has jumped 2.2 per cent and is up nearly 13 per cent since the Hodgman Government was elected.
October was the 17th consecutive month where turnover has topped $500 million, with Tasmania now surging ahead of the national average of 1.6 per cent.
These figures highlight the renewed confidence levels of the small business community. However, as we head into the festive season I encourage everyone to help continue this momentum by shopping locally this Christmas.
The internet is great for browsing, but nothing beats service and advice from a real person. So let a local business help you find the perfect gift this Christmas - you'll be helping them and Tasmania’s economy have a happy Christmas and great start to 2018.
