Share Your Story to Help Improve Education for Students with Disabilities

The Liberal Government is committed to ensuring all students in Tasmania can achieve in an inclusive environment that is responsive to their individual needs.

Recognising that many parents of special needs students were not happy, we fulfilled our election promise to establish a Ministerial Taskforce into education for students with disabilities.

Today, we can announce that the Ministerial Taskforce is calling for submissions on how we can improve outcomes for students with disabilities in our Government, Catholic and Independent schools.

Parents, school communities, interested individuals and other groups are asked to share their experiences, their views on what worked well and their suggestions for positive change.

The Taskforce, chaired by experienced educator Cheryl Larcombe and including expert representatives from a wide range of stakeholder groups, is considering:

  • the right of parents to choose the right school for their child;
  • learning strategies and the provision of education materials;
  • how best to report on educational outcomes for students with a disability;
  • disability awareness training for teachers; and
  • transitional planning.

All feedback will be taken into account, and will help inform the Taskforce's development of recommendations, which I expect to receive by June 2015.

Submissions are open until December 19, and can be emailed directly to eys.correspondence@education.tas.gov.au or posted to Ministerial Taskforce, Improved Support for Students Living with Disability, Level 1, 73 Murray St, Hobart TAS 7000.
