The Hodgman Liberal Government has a strong reputation for supporting top tier sports events to help boost tourism and jobs in regional Tasmania.
Through Events Tasmania, we are delighted to partner Cycling Tasmania to help secure the Oceania Road Cycling Championships in March 2018 – an event that is expected to see 500 people stay in Northern and North-West Tasmania for at least 4 nights.
In the past week we have seen the benefits to the State of hosting the Spirit of Tasmania Tour of Tasmania followed by the Stan Siejka Classic on Sunday, both events supported by the Tasmanian Government.
Our $30,000 investment to support the ORCC 2018 titles will stimulate the Tasmanian visitor economy at a time outside the peak tourism period.
The ORCC event will be held on March 23, 24 and 25 and attract riders and support crews from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Guam in the U19M, U19W, U23M, U23W, Elite Men and Elite Women categories.
The Time Trial is expected to be held near Evandale and the 2-day Road Race near Railton, which will help support the Tasmanian Government’s target of encouraging visitors to stay longer in regional Tasmania.
Cycling tourism in Tasmania is also on the rise. Last year there was a 16% increase in visitors to our State who participated in cycling and an unprecedented 51% increase in mountain biking.
Northern Tasmania has some of the best road cycling conditions in the world and Cycling Tasmania should be congratulated on securing these ORCC titles and further enhancing Tasmania’s reputation for hosting world class events.
We regularly produce world-class cyclists and events such as the ORCC will allow our athletes to compete on home soil as well as inspire the next generation.
