With the budget back on track the Hodgman Liberal Government is investing in education to break the cycle of disadvantage and create a job ready generation of young Tasmanians.
Our long term plan for education includes extending high schools to years 11 and 12, and it is working.
We are sending a clear message to the Tasmanian community that school doesn’t end in Year 10. From 2018, there will be a total of 38 schools offering Years 11 and 12, far exceeding our commitment to extend 21 schools to Year 12 by 2018.
“I am pleased to join with Federal Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham at Campbell Town High, one of the six schools that successfully extended to Year 12 in 2016," Minister Rockliff said.
“With the National Education Council meeting in April, today's visit is an excellent opportunity to highlight how our plan is working, with Campbell Town District High School doubling its intake for Years 11 and 12 this year.
“With students receiving as much as two years less education than their interstate peers, we know we can no longer do the same thing and expect a better result.”
Minister Birmingham said the Hodgman Liberal Government’s agenda for Tasmania’s school system was built on evidence of what has been working for schools in other states and that it was already opening doors of opportunity for Tasmania’s students.
“It’s clear the extension of high schools to Year 12 shows Tasmania is working hard to ensure the state is driving evidence-based reforms, and the students I’ve met today are excited about the opportunities those changes offer,” Minister Birmingham said.
The Tasmanian Government knows it is successes such as these that prove Tasmania is well placed at the National Education Table to push for further additional investment in education by the Commonwealth and further drive improvement.
While our extension of high schools is working, there is still a lot more to be done which is why we will continue to roll out our long term plan for education so more students can look forward to a brighter future.
