National Science Week is the nation’s largest science festival and over 120 events will be held across Tasmania this year.
More Tasmanians engage in the festival per capita than in any other state to celebrate human inventiveness and achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics - the STEM disciplines.
To recognise and encourage even greater participation in STEM the Government is also launching the new Tasmanian STEM Awards.
The Tasmanian STEM Awards have been created in conjunction with UTAS, Inspiring Australia and Engineers Australia to ensure we can best recognise those people leading the way in STEM, and also those inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
The awards are:
- The Premier’s Tasmanian STEM Researcher of the Year
- The Minister’s Tasmanian STEM Innovation of the Year
- The Tasmanian STEM Teacher of the Year for Primary Teachers
- The Tasmanian STEM Teacher of the Year for Secondary Teachers
Total prize money of $20,000 is available and the awards are open now for applications, with the winners announced in November.
Many Tasmanian schools and thousands of school students from Dover to Burnie and including the Furneaux Islands will participate in the festival.
Tasmania is a world-recognised home to a vibrant and diverse science research community, ranging across areas such as Antarctic, Southern Ocean and Marine Studies, Information and Communications Technology, Food Science, Agricultural, Aquaculture and Fisheries, and Radioastronomy.
While only 2.4 per cent of Australia’s population lives in Tasmania, we are home to some of the nation’s major scientific research organisations.
Tasmania’s public science research sector employs around 3200 people and generates some $500 million for the economy.
