Science Meets Parliament 2017

**UNDER EMBARGO UNTIL 8pm TONIGHT**

The Hodgman Liberal Government has always been a keen supporter of the Tasmanian science community as it is a key economic driver and supporter of local jobs.

As a continuation of Tasmania’s 2017 National Science Week celebrations and for the twelfth year, politicians and policy makers have joined with our best scientists and researchers at the annual Science Meets Parliament Dinner at Parliament House.

The evening provides the opportunity to showcase the best in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities around the state, as well as ensuring the sector attracts and retains the best people to take it forward and build on successes.

Despite our small population representing just 2.4 per cent of the total in Australia, Tasmania is home to 4.2 per cent of the nation’s scientific research organisations.

The sector employs about 3200 people across the state, which represents an annual investment and spend of around $500 million in scientific research.

As a key employer and economic driver, the Hodgman Government is committed to STEM education and providing opportunities for more young Tasmanians to enter this profession now and in the future.

*A reminder - nominations for the Tasmanian STEM Excellence Awards close on September 29, 2017, with the winners announced in November.
