Science facilities upgraded at Sheffield School

Providing Tasmanian students with modern and contemporary learning spaces is part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s plan to lift education outcomes in Tasmania while also stimulating the construction industry and creating jobs.

We are investing $110 million in school infrastructure upgrades, the largest amount for 20 years, as a key part of continuing to improve student’s learning outcomes so they can build their knowledge and a path to their future careers.

Today it was my pleasure to officially open the refurbished science facilities at Sheffield School that will allow for a more modern and better equipped facility for students.

The $500,000 upgrade to the existing science area will provide students and staff with access to two laboratories and a Prep room which will allow for more inclusive and engaging spaces.

The refurbishment will benefit student’s learning in science and offers opportunities for students for careers in agriculture and science related fields, including health science, medicine and engineering.

Sheffield School focuses on the importance of science in relation to the development of education in agriculture and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There is an Agriculture program offered at the school farm, with the potential to extend this with Years 11 and 12 offerings when the school extends next year.

The science facility is predominately used by high school students but it provides enough flexibility to be used by primary aged children.

I’d like to acknowledge the great work by local architect, Michael Wilkinson, along with builders, Vos Construction and Joinery to deliver this project for the students in Sheffield.

Across the forward estimates, the 2016-17 Budget provides the biggest state investment in Tasmanian Government school infrastructure in two decades – building our education future by upgrading students’ learning environments while also growing the Tasmanian economy.
