Science-based management leads to biomass adjustments

There is no stronger supporter of Tasmania’s world class salmon industry than the Hodgman Liberal Government; Tasmania needs the jobs and economic opportunities that this industry brings.

That is why we fully support today’s draft determination by the independent director of the Environmental Protection Authority regarding biomass limits in Macquarie Harbour.

The EPA’s science-based draft determination has drawn on the latest data and proves that the salmon industry is being adaptively and effectively managed under the new independent process we established.

We want to see the industry grow responsibly and sustainably into the future which is why we strengthened the regulatory system by establishing the EPA as the independent regulator, and by introducing significantly tougher penalties and demerit points that could result in a loss of licence for breaches.

As a Government we are committed to continuing to work with the industry to support sustainable growth of Tasmania’s world-class salmon industry, and jobs into regional Tasmania, into the future.
