Tasmanians can look forward to exploring Sarah Island on upgraded walking tracks and a new ramp when parks are reopened for the public to enjoy.
Sarah Island is one of our tourism gems within the Macquarie Harbour Historic site and Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, and the completion of these works will add to its appeal as a unique tourism experience.
Upgrades like these are delivering contemporary facilities for tourists and locals to enjoy in our parks and reserves, which will be more important than ever for our tourism industry once restrictions are lifted.
With the island set to mark 200 years since it was established as a penal colony next year, the new tracks will allow visitors to reflect on the history of the island with ruins of the convict settlement remaining.
The upgrades complement improvements completed at the site last year, which included the opening of a new visitor shelter and the replacement of interpretation panels, which provide an introduction to the island’s convict history.
The $105,844 project was funded through the Tasmanian Government’s Improved Statewide Visitor Infrastructure program.
