Saddened at the death of Tim Hill

We are extremely saddened to learn of the death of Tim Hill, who retired last year after 22 years of service as a magistrate and coroner.

Mr Hill, who was widely acknowledged as one of Tasmania's most experienced and respected magistrates, passed away on Sunday evening following a battle with illness.

He served as a magistrate in Devonport and Launceston between 1992 and 2014. It is estimated that during his time on the bench he presided over more than 55,000 matters.

Mr Hill's courteous and measured approach was appreciated by those who appeared before him and he was held in the highest regard by fellow magistrates, the profession, court staff and those who had dealings with the Court.

He embodied the key qualities essential to judicial office: integrity, a calm temperament and sound judgement.

His contribution to the Magistrates Court, particularly in Devonport and Launceston, was significant.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Government I extend my condolences to Tim's family.
