Today I was pleased to launch Rural Business Tasmania's Rural Relief Fund appeal to raise funds to support our farming families when in times of need.
In many cases, it has been a productive season for Tasmanian agriculture, but of course with challenging conditions for farmers in some areas.
But, our farmers are resilient for a reason: they are at the mercy of the elements and markets are very difficult to control.
This is why an initiative like the Rural Relief Fund is so critical. Rural Business Tasmania can act quickly to support those families most affected and in immediate need by helping them to meet their personal requirements, which are often outside the scope of larger Government programs.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to doing everything we can to make sure our primary industries flourish, including supporting our farming families.
We believe we can grow the farm gate value of Tasmania's agricultural industries to $10 billion a year by 2050.
Our $30 million investment in Tranche 2 irrigation schemes, matched by private investment and $60 million in Commonwealth funds, will go a long way to helping to achieve this by drought proofing many fertile areas across our state.
And, recent free trade agreements with China and Korea, together with the Premier's Trade Mission next month, will also build on a growing hunger for our fresh, premium and safe products in overseas market.
There is lots of competition for the charity dollar but the Rural Relief Fund is all about helping a mate or a friend in need which is a long established trademark of our rural communities
