Road users urged to take extra care as school resumes

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to working with the community to achieve our Towards Zero vision of ending serious injury crashes on our roads.

We are particularly focused on the safety of our most vulnerable road users – motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians – who lack the protection of a motor vehicle.

This week, our children and young people will be beginning a new school year, some for the first time, and whether they are walking, riding their bikes, or catching a bus, their safety should be on the minds of all Tasmanian motorists.

Over the summer many motorists will have fallen out of the habit of slowing down in school zones, and we know children can be unpredictable crossing roads or getting off buses.

That’s why we are today urging all road users to be extra careful around schools and school buses, particularly on country roads.

The school zone speed limit of 40km/h is there for the safety of our children, and also applies when school bus lights are flashing.

School crossing patrol officers play a vital part in keeping children safe, and both children and drivers should do what they ask.

The Road Safety Advisory Council will be continuing its current “stop, look, listen, think” campaign aimed at school children, with a television commercial set to run for another fortnight.

School children also have the opportunity to win an iPad by entering a competition at www.rsac.tas.gov.au/roadsafekids
