Road safety improvements around Lauderdale Primary School

The Tasmanian Government is taking action to improve traffic safety around Lauderdale Primary School.

After a thorough investigation by the Department of State Growth including a review of speed limits and the existing footpath infrastructure, I have written to the Transport Commissioner to ask him to consider a range of speed reductions to improve safety for school students and parents dropping kids at Lauderdale Primary.

The measures I have proposed to the Commissioner include:

  • Reducing the existing 80 km/h and 70 km/h speed limits on South Arm Highway from the Oakdowns roundabout to the end of the 70 km/h speed zone on the southern side of Lauderdale, to 60 km/h; and
  • Installation of electronic Variable Speed Limit signs denoting 40 km/h during school pick up and drop off times, on the approximately 600m section of South Arm Highway from just north of Acton Road, to Ringwood Road.

This will provide a safer environment on the approaches to the intersection of South Arm Highway with Acton Road, especially in the school zone.

On the footpath and safety barriers, I have asked the Department to continue to work with Clarence City Council and other stakeholders such as TasNetworks to consider options to further separate the footpath South Arm Highway.

We will continue to work closely with the school community and broader community to ensure the safety of students and pedestrians.
