The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to working with the community to realise the Towards Zero vision of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
A strong focus is on our vulnerable road users – bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians – who are overrepresented in serious and fatal crashes.
Today, I was pleased to launch the Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program, an initiative that aims to encourage physical activity and promote safe behaviours on and around the road in our next generation.
The Government is supporting the program with a $100,000 funding commitment that will enable Ride2School to be rolled out to primary schools around the State.
Working with parents, teachers and children, Ride2School helps to identify the barriers to riding to school and the best ways to overcome them.
The program teaches bike safety skills, road rules and safe behaviours.
Cycling is a great activity for people of all ages, and is growing in popularity.
We want to keep cyclists safe on our roads, and that’s why we are investing, through the Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2007-16, in initiatives like Ride2School.
Road safety is a community responsibility, and I commend everyone involved in delivering Ride2School to our next generation of road users.
