RHH Redevelopment progress a reality

The 10-storey Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment structure is now complete and the new helipad is installed, with a massive effort underway by around 400 sub-contractor workers fitting out the building.

When 2018 began, the building site was successfully ‘out of the ground’ with the ground floor slab of K-Block completed.

The year, we have:

  • completed the building’s concrete structure and all floor slab pours floors
  • installed the life-saving helipad on the roof
  • progressed installation of glazing and window’s sun shades
  • progressed internal fit out – plastering, painting and floor covering and joinery installation
  • installed major building services infrastructure including the central energy plant
  • installed the 66 tonne, multi-place hyperbaric chamber

Major pieces of furniture, fitting and equipment have been procured, including:

  • $5.4 million contract for the supply and maintenance of digital operating theatre equipment
  • $618,000 contract for the supply and maintenance of neonatal and paediatric intensive care unit pendants
  • $4.47 million contract for the supply and maintenance of central sterilising equipment, accessories and maintenance.

The RHH Redevelopment remains on track to reach practical completion mid-2019, which is now less than 12 months away.

The Redevelopment is Tasmania’s largest health infrastructure project and when complete will mean increased bed capacity, more operating and procedure rooms, and state-of-the-art health facilities.

Young people will receive age-appropriate care in Tasmania’s first dedicated 16-bed adolescent unit – including specialist mental health facilities that have not previously been provided.

The Hodgman Liberal Government recently announced changes to K-Block, which will dedicate level 10 to a 64-bed capacity general and respiratory medicine ward. This was in line with clinical recommendations and will improve patient care.

We will progressively open 250 additional beds across the Royal Hobart and Repatriation Hospital campuses, informed by the Clinical Planning Taskforce.

The Government will continue to listen closely to our staff and stakeholders, and will always look at what we can do to provide more support for our health system.
