Tasmania’s retail sector has continued its upward trajectory, growing for the 26th consecutive month under the Hodgman majority Liberal Government.
This is another sign of continued confidence and positive momentum in our community and economy, which is the most powerful driver of jobs growth in Tasmania.
The ABS figures out today for last year’s Christmas period marks the eighth consecutive month where retail sales achieved a turnover of over $500 million.
Thanks to Tasmanian consumers, who month after month are putting their hard earned money back into the local economy by supporting local businesses. And thanks to Tasmanian businesses for looking after their customers, offering products and value-adding services that are holding their own against the online shopping phenomenon.
These are the conditions businesses need to grow and employ more Tasmanians, but there is still more work to be done, and the Hodgman Government will continue with our promise to deliver more jobs and stronger economic outcomes for all Tasmanians.
We are cutting red tape to allow small businesses to thrive, we are transforming education to better prepare young Tasmanians for life and work and we have invested $100 million in our Northern Economic Stimulus Package, which will see investment flow to local firms to deliver key projects and jobs in the North and North-West.
