Residential buildings

More and more Tasmanians are realising the dream of building their own home and growing the economy and creating jobs in the process.

According to the latest ABS figures, the number of dwelling approvals have stabilised after steady increases since March 2014.

The number of dwellings approved for construction in March 2016 was 196.

The value of residential building approvals in the year to March 2016 was 2.9 per cent higher than the level one year earlier.

There is significant investment in the building and construction sector at the moment, which is creating jobs and as a Government we are doing everything we can to support that.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to making it fairer, faster, simpler and cheaper to build in Tasmania to encourage development and create more jobs.

Last month the House of Assembly passed the Building Bill 2016 which introduces a streamlined, risk-based approach to building and plumbing approvals that will remove the need for building permits for many projects, up to and including some two-storey houses.

This is about minimising regulatory and administrative costs and delays, while providing appropriate protections for consumers and the wider community.
