REISSUED: Education wins Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence

The Department of Education’s best practice and innovation has been nationally recognised at the Prime Minister’s Award in Public Sector Management, taking out the silver over Commonwealth, State/Territory and Local Governments in Australia for the successful implementation of Tasmania’s 12 Child and Family Centres (CFCs).

As Minister for Education I congratulate the Department of Education and all stakeholders for their dedication, commitment and hard work.

The department's approach to implementing the CFCs was an innovative response to the challenge of engaging families and communities in their children’s learning.

Informed by best-practice early years strategies and targeted data, the department found supporting and working with communities and families was integral to the planning process and the ongoing management of these centres.

This recognition proves the department is able to implement innovative solutions to engage families and communities in education around our state, particularly in our most disadvantaged communities.

This successful approach will continue as we move into the next stage of reform in education, working with communities across Tasmania to enable earlier access to Prep and Kindergarten for all Tasmanian children.

This important reform along with many other legislative changes to education provides a modern enduring legislative framework for education in Tasmania as part of the Education Bill 2016, passed by the Legislative Council yesterday.

The Legislative Council provided in-principle support to important early years reforms, subject to Parliament’s approval of an implementation plan in 2017.

CFCs play a vital in the Hodgman Government's early years education strategy as they provide a single entry point to universal, targeted and specialist early years services and support from pregnancy to age five, and I am thrilled that this important initiative and the amazing staff who work in our centres receive the national recognition they deserve.
