Reducing cost of living pressures for Tasmanians

In the first year of our second term, the re-elected Hodgman Majority Liberal Government is delivering on our Plan to keep cost of living pressures low for Tasmanians.

While all Labor and the Greens can do is shout criticism from the sidelines, the Hodgman Liberal Government has been working hard to deliver better outcomes for Tasmanians.

We have a Tasmania First Energy policy and the Government is committed to delivering low cost, reliable and clean electricity to Tasmanians, and we have delivered.

In 2017-18 we capped regulated electricity price increases for residents and small businesses, easing the burden of electricity costs. This follows action we took to cap prices in the previous financial year.

Through the Government’s decisive action, Tasmania is regarded as having the lowest regulated electricity prices in the nation.

In addition, Parliament has passed Government legislation to lower water and sewerage prices, as well as committing to delivering up to $1.8 billion in upgrades to water and sewage infrastructure sooner by working with TasWater and Local Government.

Under Labor and the Greens, electricity prices rose 65 per cent over seven years, putting excessive pressure on households.

What’s more, Labor lowered the prudent water management levels during the carbon tax period, which threatened the State’s energy security.

The Liberal Government has listened to the concerns of Tasmanians, and we will continue to take action on the cost of living.

Our targets for cost of living include:

  • Ensure Tasmania has the lowest regulated electricity prices in the country throughout the next four year term of Government
  • Keep cost of living increases for Government services, on average, at or below the rate of inflation for the next four years of government
