Recruitment to support introduction of Home Detention

Recruitment has commenced for operational staff at the Monitoring and Compliance Unit, which will provide 24-hour, seven-day-a-week electronic monitoring of court ordered offenders.

Amendments to the Sentencing Act 1997 were passed in November last year to introduce Home Detention Orders as a new sentencing option.

Home Detention Orders will require an offender to be at a specified premises, during specified times and to comply with strict conditions.

Amendments to the Family Violence Act 2004 have also allowed courts to make electronic monitoring a condition of Family Violence Orders for offenders who have been convicted of, or charged with, a family violence offence or who have a history of family violence.

The positions are part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s $4.3 million-a-year commitment to alternative sentencing options.

The Monitoring and Compliance Unit will enable the Department of Justice and the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management to track offenders who have been fitted with a GPS ankle band.

The bands can track an offender’s movements and ensure that, for a Home Detention Order, they remain at home or, for a Family Violence Order, they are excluded from entering certain areas where the victim resides or works.

These essential frontline positions will respond to alerts and breaches, to ensure that the conditions associated with electronic monitoring are observed in compliance with the requirements of the relevant order and legislation.
