Education is a major priority for the Hodgman Liberal Government which is why we are investing record amounts in staff, schools and resources to lift education outcomes in Tasmania.
As part of our Government’s accountability we publish, on an annual basis, our Education Scorecard so that the public can see this significant investment and the improved education outcomes that are being achieved.
One of the most pleasing improvements has been in the Attainment Rate for TCE students which has improved 10 per cent from 2014 to 2018. The Apparent Retention Rate for TCE students is also improving, up 4 percentage points since 2014.
The Education Scorecard shows that since 2014 there are 142.8 FTE more teachers, 193.4 FTE more teachers assistants and 63.75 FTE more professional Support Staff like speech pathologists, psychologists, social workers and nurses.
Communities around the State are also embracing our program to extend high schools to Years 11-12 with 38 schools making the move so far and the remainder on track by 2022.
Today I spoke with students at Prospect High School who are excited about their school being one of the five schools extending to Year 11 and 12 in 2019, along with Penguin District School, Parklands High School, Kings Meadows High School and Winnaleah District School in partnership with Scottsdale High School.
Extending schools to Years 11 and 12 is about providing the right mix of senior secondary study opportunities that meet the individual and diverse needs of every student, and importantly, sends a clear message to the Tasmanian community that school doesn’t end in Year 10.
It means that more of our students have the opportunity to stay on and study Year 12 at their local high school and achieve a Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) or equivalent.
The Extension School Program supports a collective approach in which schools and colleges work in partnership to offer a range of Year 11-12 curriculum, providing young Tasmanians with the opportunity for more choice about where to complete their senior secondary education, and to do so closer to home.
