The Tasmanian Government is committed to a strong disability and aged services sector with a strong and committed leadership to deliver the assistance and care Tasmanians with a disability or the aged community need.
Today saw the start of the new National Disability Services (NDS) Future Leaders Program 2017, supported through funding from Skills Tasmania.
This 10 month leadership course, delivered by Avidity Training & Development in collaboration with NDS, will provide tailored and recognised training and development to new and emerging supervisors, and aspiring and recently appointed leaders in the carer and services profession.
The program is structured around monthly two day workshops across the 10 month duration where participants can take their newly acquired skills back to their workplaces from day one.
This course will give these leaders of tomorrow extra tools to lead the direction of this sector, especially under the changing and evolving landscape of the NDIS.
Disability services are crucial across the nation, but especially in Tasmania – the last ABS statistics ranked Tasmania has having the highest rate of disability in the nation at over 23 per cent of the population.
It also goes without saying that our population is ageing – we have more seniors than ever before and it is a growing task to provide the services that our older Tasmanians need as they reach their later years.
And I also believe that the area of intellectual disabilities and illness are receiving more acknowledgement than they have in the past.
We also have some 24 000 ‘Community and Personal Service Workers’ is Tasmania – this is around 11 per cent of Tasmanians who choose this career – so leadership is vital.
In addition to receiving Certificate IV qualifications in Leadership and Management, participants will gain skills in personal and professional transition to leadership - Leading Self, Leading Others and Leading in a Workplace.
The program is also designed to build strong and connected network of carer and services professionals across the State to lead the sector forward.
The NDS Future Leaders Program will make this sector even stronger and provide a better quality of life for our aged and Tasmanians living with a disability, as well as those living with a mental illness.
