The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to creating jobs and providing Tasmanians with the infrastructure they need, such as roads, so that they can travel safely and spend more time with their families.
That is why a re-elected majority Liberal Government will increase our long-term average investment in public infrastructure by 20 per cent over four years. This commitment will result in an average of $70 million extra being spent each year on vital infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools and hospitals.
Modern infrastructure is essential in supporting our growing economy and tourism industry, as well as ensuring Tasmanians have the modern facilities they expect in the health and education sectors.
I had the pleasure of visiting the ongoing project at Summerleas Road today which is a prime example of how an increased infrastructure commitment will improve productivity, increase commuter and pedestrian safety and create jobs, with 60 Tasmanians employed on the project.
The $22 million project is being completed by two Tasmanian contractors, VEC and Shaw, and will separate the Huon Highway from Summerleas Road which will pass underneath the highway. Other works include a roundabout on Summerleas Road, an overtaking lane on the highway, a flexible safety barrier, safer bus stops and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Huon Highway is a key corridor connecting major industries such as forestry, aquaculture and agriculture to central Hobart and other destinations, and this project is a great example of how we are and will continue investing in modern infrastructure and creating jobs, to the benefit of all Tasmanians.
