Rail investment creates more jobs

The Hodgman Liberal Government’s investment in rail infrastructure is creating jobs and improving the safety, reliability and efficiency of our rail network.

I am pleased to announce Tasmanian company Stubbs Construction has been awarded a $5.5 million contract for works at the South Burnie Rail Yard, with up to 35 local jobs expected to be created.

This is in line with our Buy Local policy, and will help stimulate the northwest economy and encourage more growth in the local construction sector.

The project will result in a purpose-built facility being built to allow the installation of a new under-floor wheel lathe, replacing the existing above-floor wheel lathe which has reached the end of its life.

The project will result in numerous benefits such as:

  • Reduced maintenance costs for rolling stock
  • Reduced time for wheel turning  and re-profiling
  • Productivity improvements
  • Increased asset availability
  • Reduced wheel/rail noise

I congratulate Stubbs Construction on being awarded this contract and I look forward to continued growth in the sector, especially in the northwest  of the state.
