Qualifications redesigned for the better

The Tasmanian Parliament has passed laws that will lift education in our state.

The Tasmanian Parliament and stakeholders have shown strong support for this key legislative reform, which will create an efficient and effective qualifications system for senior secondary education.

The Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification will now replace the Tasmanian Qualifications Authority.

The new model will ensure that educational standards in this state continue to improve and are equivalent to other states and territories.

The legislation maintains independent regulation of assessment and certification, and provides clarity in areas of the curriculum and data management.

This new approach will help to ensure greater stakeholder engagement, improve standards, openness and transparency.

Importantly, TASC will maintain the independence required for ensuring rigorous senior secondary educational standards, while enhancing collaboration across all sectors and improving the management of Kindergarten to Year 12 student data in the Government sector.

Stakeholders have been extensively consulted and broadly supportive of these changes, with support from the Catholic Education Office, Independent Schools Tasmania, The University of Tasmania, TasTAFE, the TCCI, TASSO, the AEU, The Tasmanian Principals Association, and the Network of Education Associations of Tasmania.

The Executive Officer position will now be advertised. The selection panel will include a representative from the Catholic Education Office and Independent Schools Tasmania as well as an expert from a similar accreditation body interstate.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is delivering on its promise to improve education and reduce boards and committees, with this change to deliver $3 million in savings over the forward estimates.
