Prison telephony system to be upgraded

From tomorrow tenders are being advertised for the supply, installation and maintenance of a new telephony system for use throughout Tasmania’s prison system, included as part of the Hodgman Government’s $340 million new prison infrastructure agenda.

The existing system uses outdated technology, having been installed in 2010.

The new contract will allow for the Tasmania Prison Service to provide more phones to prisoners across all TPS sites, including the new $70 million Southern Remand Centre at the Risdon site and the new $270 million Northern Prison.

It is anticipated the system will reduce call costs, provide more streamlined administrative processes for staff and better call-monitoring capabilities.
