From a working demonstration of weeding by a totally autonomous robot to mapping satellites, the third annual Precision Agriculture Expo in Deloraine combines machinery demonstrations with technology displays to showcase the most up to date precision agriculture techniques and initiatives available to farmers.
In order to remain competitive and sustainable, precision agriculture is helping Tasmanian farmers adapt to advanced technologies to monitor, measure and better manage key environmental factors, to ensure the best possible crop yields.
The annual Precision Agriculture Expo is being delivered as part of a $530,000 precision agriculture project, led by the Tasmanian Agricultural Productivity Group (TAPG) in collaboration with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) and Serve-Ag. The Government has contributed over $370,000 to the project, while a further $160,000 has been invested by industry stakeholders.
The On-Farm Productivity program is part of the Government’s Cultivating Prosperity in Agriculture initiative, which delivered $2.9 million in extra funding for Research, Development and Extension on top of the annual funding the Government already provides to TIA.
It complements another Cultivating Prosperity in Agriculture initiative, the $1.5 million Water for Profit program, helping farmers to maximise their returns from the rapid expansion of irrigation around the State.
The Hodgman Liberal Government recognises that innovation and its practical adoption will need to remain a key driver of Tasmanian agriculture, helping equip Tasmanian farmers to achieve the Government’s vision of growing the value of Tasmania’s agricultural production tenfold to $10 billion per annum by 2050.
