Positive year for Metro

The 2016-17 Metro Annual Report confirms the Hodgman Liberal Government’s commitment to providing a sustainable public transport system for Tasmanians both now and in the future.

The Report confirmed boardings are increasing with 8.18 million passenger journeys on Metro buses for 2016-17. Importantly, overall passenger satisfaction as revealed by the customer Satisfaction Survey was 78 per cent, exceeding the target of 75 per cent.

These are great outcomes for Metro and confirm the need for the 100 new buses that we announced as part of the 2015-16 Budget, which has created jobs for the North West coast.  Elphinstone has advised the construction of the new fleet is on track with the first bus to be delivered before the end of this year.

Other pleasing results from the Annual Report include:

  • seven new articulated buses now being on the road.
  • a 14 per cent increase in passenger numbers on buses travelling before 7am during the Government’s free bus trial from January to February this year.
  • the launch of a new service connecting North West Regional Hospital (Burnie) and Mersey Community Hospital (Latrobe) via Ulverstone and Devonport, with passengers attending either hospital as a patient or visitor entitled to a free return trip.

I thank everyone at Metro for another successful year and look forward to more great outcomes for Tasmanians.
