Positive report card on climate change

A report card on the 2018 Hodgman Liberal Government’s Climate Action 21: Tasmania’s Climate Change Action Plan 2017-2021 has been released providing information on progress against Climate Change priorities.

The Key achievements outlined in the report card for the period 1 June 2017 to 30 June 2018 include:

• supporting 17 councils to consider climate-related risks in decision making;
• providing ChargeSmart grant funding of $50,000 to support electric vehicle charging stations at workplaces;
• having 14 Tasmanian vehicle fleets participate in Smarter Fleets to improve efficiency and generate savings;
• having 48 businesses completing continuity planning to prepare for and respond to extreme events;
• holding eight business resource efficiency seminars across Tasmania in May and June 2018;
• undertaking 12 state-wide workshops for financial counsellors to better assist vulnerable clients in managing their energy use and power bills;
• initiating a $100,000 research project to investigate coincident extreme events; and
• having an additional 339 hectares of land now irrigated with effluent under the Fert$mart program, in conjunction with DairyTas.

TheClimate Action 21: Tasmania’s Climate Change Action Plan 2017-2021 and the Climate Action 21 Implementation Plan were released in 2017, and sets the Governments agenda for action on climate change.

The Hodgman Liberal Government once again confirmed its commitment to the action plan in Building your Future First Year Agenda, May 2018.

Since the release of Climate Action 21, the latest emissions data show Tasmania achieved zero net emissions in 2015-16. Tasmania is the first jurisdiction in Australia to achieve zero net emissions.
