The Hodgman Liberal Government is a proud supporter of our servicemen and women and their families and the establishment of memorials that recognise their sacrifice.
It was my pleasure today as the Member for Lyons, and also on behalf of the Premier, to be part of the ceremony to officially unveil the Port Sorell Defence Memorial.
This has been a fantastic community effort with the Memorial Committee raising $55,000 through fund raising and the sale of bricks in the pathway.
The Premier’s Discretionary Fund contributed $4000 to the project.
It was also my pleasure to donate a Lone Pine tree, grown from the original seed stock sourced from Gallipoli, to give this new memorial a tangible link to our original ANZACs.
Congratulations to Committee Chairman Rod Bramich and his team, including local service groups, for their determination and commitment in seeing this project through to completion.
It is vitally important that all members of communities, like Port Sorell, understand the contributions or former generations in serving their nation and protecting the freedoms we often take for granted.
Congratulations again to everyone involved with this project – the recognition is truly appreciated by Tasmanians who are currently serving in our armed forces and by the veterans and families of previous generations.
