Port Arthur is one of Tasmania’s most iconic heritage tourism destinations and it is experiencing increased visitation under the policies of the Hodgman Liberal Government.
Last financial year saw over 340,000 visitors go through the gates and the momentum shows no sign of slowing down, with current visitor numbers showing an amazing 10 per cent increase compared to this time last year.
The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) has responded to this demand by expanding and renovating the Port Arthur Visitor centre, and I was delighted to visit the site today to see how construction is coming along.
The works, valued at $12 million, are being carried out by Tasmanian-based company VOS Constructions in line with our Buy Local policy, which is great news for the local economy and will have significant flow on benefits for the Tasman Peninsula community.
The Visitor Centre plays a critical role in management of visitors and commercial operations and this upgrade will resolve capacity for both visitors and staff.
The Visitor Centre redevelopment is the largest construction project ever undertaken by PAHSMA and is entirely self-funded through savings and borrowings.
