Poppy Field of Remembrance at Parliament

In the lead up to ANZAC day Parliament House lawns in Hobart will be transformed into a spectacular poppy field of remembrance to recognise the sacrifice of soldiers who served during the Gallipoli campaign.

8,141 red plastic poppies will be planted in the next four days, symbolising the number of Australians who were tragically killed in action at Gallipoli during World War I over eight months.

The concept has been conceived by the Mercury newspaper who were inspired by the striking public art installation at the Tower of London last year to mark 100 years since Britain’s involvement began in WWI.

Members of the community can purchase and plant a poppy for a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to the Returned & Services League Tasmania.

The Premier said the field of poppies will encourage Tasmanians of all ages to honour the memory of our courageous soldiers, while supporting the invaluable work RSL Tasmania does in providing support to service personnel, veterans and their families.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly said she was honoured to be able to assist the Mercury and RSL Tasmania in realising their poignant visual tribute which will capture the ANZAC spirit using the symbol of remembrance, the poppy.

Ms Archer said she was looking forward to seeing the sea of red poppies take shape throughout the week and hoped school children in particular would take an interest in the stunning display.

RSL volunteers will be selling the poppies on Parliament House lawns from 10am – 3.30pm Tuesday 21 April to Friday 24 April.

The Centenary of ANZAC represents one of the most significant commemorative occasions for our nation and initiatives like this one signify Tasmanian’s keenness to pay their respects and ensure our rich military history is passed on to future generations.
