Police successfully cracking down on drug crime

Well done to our hardworking police force, who have made a number of seizures as part of a national week of action targeting illicit drugs in the community – Operation Vitreus.

Tasmania Police’s drug detection dog teams and detectives from Southern, Northern and Western Drug Investigation Services attended mail and freight centres around the state and conducted thousands of package screenings.

In total, 33 suspect packages were detected – 3 of which contained methamphetamine (ICE), 4 cocaine, 4 MDMA, 3 LSD, 6 cannabis, 1 Diazepam, 8 steroids, 2 analogue drugs, 1 canabis oil and 1 cannabis seeds.

The Hodgman Majority Liberal Government is unapologetically tough on crime and committed to keeping Tasmanians safe.

That’s why we are investing in Tasmania Police, employing 125 more police in the next three-and-a-half years, after already increasing the number of police by 108 in our first term of Government.

We have also worked hard since the election to give police the tools they need to crack down on crime, such as our Outlaw Motorcycle Gang colours and consorting legislation and funding the roll-out of body-worn cameras to frontline officers.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to making Tasmania the safest state in Australia, and we will continue to invest in our first-class police service to achieve this.

Thank you to our police for the hard work they’ve done this week, and continue to do every day.

Our targets to keep Tasmanians safe include:

  • Having the lowest serious crime rate in the nation across all victimisation measures by 2022.
  • Having the lowest use of crystal methamphetamine (ice) of any state by 2022.
  • Reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on Tasmania’s roads to zero by 2050.
  • Decreasing the risk to Tasmanian lives and properties from bushfire by 33% by 2022.
